Okay, weird thing happened today. All of a sudden, ALL of my remote controls (to my TV, DVD player, cable box, speaker system) stopped working.
I am so utterly confused. Sometimes they will work if I hold it at the right angle and repeatedly press the button. What could cause interference to all my remotes? They all are infra-red remotes.
Is this the beginning of the end of the world? Someone help...

Re: my remotes are possessed
Fri, April 1, 2005 - 2:18 AMThere's no chance they didn't all get wet or something by accident? Or all crammed into one spot so that all the buttons were depressed and drained all the batteries?
I've never heard of anything causing IR interference along the lines you describe. The "right angle" phenonmenon you mention sounds very strange. -

Re: my remotes are possessed
Fri, April 1, 2005 - 1:32 PMNope, they didnt get wet. Sometimes I stack them on top of each other which can sometimes depress a button and drain a button. But I replaced the batteries just to be sure, and not surprisingly, they still didnt work.
I have an IR wireless keyboard, but I've had it (as well as my other appliances) for almost 4 years no problems.
I thought that maybe it could have been the keyboard so i shut down my computer and the remotes still didnt work.
None of the keys on my remotes seem to be jammed.
Today, my cable box remote is being more responsive. It can change channels on the cable box, but cant control any of the TV functions. (which it used to since it has universal capabilities)
If I have a neighbor with some sort of IR appliance, could that cause all my remotes to stop functioning? -

I'd think that would be pretty hard...the signals don't carry that far, and they're all using rather discrete FM signals on that band. Which means it's probably not the sun (sun? What sun?) coming in through the window either (the early ultrasonic models used to key when birds would chirp in the am).
So now the cable will control channels, but not the TV--and you've "re-told" it what code the TV is. Fascinating...maybe some holy water *is* in order... -

Re: my remotes are possessed
Fri, April 1, 2005 - 3:19 PMDo you smoke?
Clean the little plastic emiter window part on each remote, and also the receptor part on the cable box.
Worth a try even if you dont smoke.

Re: my remotes are possessed
Fri, April 1, 2005 - 6:22 PMAs a fellow Rochester denizen, I think I can rule out strong sunlight as the cause of interference.
Sometimes, my VCR or other component will get pushed back deeper in the entertainment cabinet. The cabinet walls then block the IR signal from my favorite viewing position and I'm forced to operate the remote at arms length or get up to pull the component back to the front edge of the cabinet shelf.
IR is "line of sight" so you can close your window shades to rule out neighbor interference. I think an ambient heat source wuold have to be pretty intense to interfere with the signal.
If the batteries are fresh, make sure the battery contacts are very clean.
If you have a neighbor with the same cable box, try his or her remote in your room.
cheers,

Re: my remotes are possessed
Sat, April 2, 2005 - 9:57 AMNo, I dont smoke but I will clean each remote. I dont have a cabinet, all my video appliances are all sitting on a shelf. So 'line of sight' isnt a problem. (ive walked all around the room clicking the remote and even aimed point blank -- no response)
I closed all my shades and windows to block out any possible neighboring IR rays. Still didnt help.
the battery compartments on each of my remotes look clean. No dust. But if they were dirty, that seems unlikely that they all became dirty enough to stop functioning at the same time.
I took the batteries out of all my remotes (in case one of the buttons was depressed and constantly shooting rays at my TV), and one by one, I would place the batteries back in and try to turn on my TV. Nothing.
So out of my DVD remote, my TV remote, my cable box remote, and my audio system remote, all of them barely function except for the cable box remote, which now functions perfectly fine.
My wireless keyboard (which is in the same room as my tv) also works fine. (never stopped working) -

Re: my remotes are possessed
Sun, April 3, 2005 - 12:46 PMHow weird. Three days later, as mysteriously as they stopped working, all my remotes are now fully functioning once again.
I have no idea what caused them to temporarilly die, but I'm glad that they are all working. (and hopefully will stay that way) Thanks for everyones advice and tips.
Now, I must catch up on all the "Must-See-TV" that I've TiVoed. Ciao!

Re: my remotes are possessed
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 10:54 AMnope its an old tube tv. (4 years old) For three days, no matter what time of day, all the remotes were 99% unfunctional.
But they are now all fully working again. -

what kind of equipment do you have...I know with some DVD players they would lock up...there should be a reset function. Also electrical interence would play havoc with your equipment if the surge protector was damaged or bad. I seen high end Power protection devices go bad and interfer with equipment in the immedite area.
