Need some Tivo advice

topic posted Thu, April 7, 2005 - 9:06 PM by  Chance
I'm looking to get a PVR, Tivo or some other system, and need some advice. I don't want to have to pay the monthly fee to Tivo, so I'm planning on manaully setting recording times, unless there in some other legal way (alternate servers, etc?).

I also would like a way to network the device with my PC, so I can backup any shows I decide to save to the computer, and eventually out to DVD for archival purposes. I don't watch that much cable TV (we have Comcast here) but there are a few TV shows I enjoy and would like to be able to save (Project Greenlight, for one).

Any any one recommend a *good* website with clear answers to what I am looking for. As a long time geek I'm not afriad to modify a existist machine to do what I want. I had been thinking of setting up another PC to do some of the same stuff, but my TV Tuner is kinda fading, and I'd rather have a stand along machine for this if possible, so a HTPC could be used for other purposes at the same time.

Thanks!

Well, to make it easy, if you want to manually set or not pay a monthly or lifetime fee, you don't want a Tivo.

I'd recommend you try, at least for a time, the DVR your cable company offers - it'll be cheap and you can always send it back.

You can use that while you consider building and testing one.

And I'd recommend checking the avsforum.com for HTPC and DVR info.

    Good Luck!

We're in a transition period of sorts for DVR's. The TiVo and ReplayTV models are a bit behind the times, as neither supports HD recording at present. Open source projects such as MythTV are making progress, but they're not yet that reliable. And other standalone DVRs tend to be lacking as far as finding and recording shows is concerned.

So I would suggest not buying anything until the market shakes itself out, and instead get a DVR through Comcast.

DVR better thought cable company there easy to setup I'am sure there way to record to hard drive of computer. Just wondering if there anyway to make to contect to wireless network show as componet of network. There little problem have is you can't record three shows at sametime. Could record two at sametime but you need to watch one.

I have an extreme geek (kinda wanna-be... ) friend who thinks MythTV is the answer to all prayers, if you're still looking.

      I'm a die-hard TiVo nut...

      Good luck with your setup!
