I recently bought some TV series on DVDs, is it me or it seems like the HDTV version is high res?! The DVD version is more blurry, grainy, has muted shadow areas etc.. Even the HRHD version of DIVX rips are better than DVD versions. What is going on?!

Re: HDTV vs. DVD - which is higher res?!
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 8:15 PMDVD has a maximum resolution of 480i (480 horizontal scan lines).
HDTV has several different modes, the most common of which are 720p (720 pixels) and 1080i (1080 horizontal scan lines).
So a DVD recording of an HDTV series will be grainier.
As a frame of reference, conventional TV has 425 scan lines. -

Mon, May 23, 2005 - 7:12 AMDVD's were designed to hold standard video recording resolution or lower (480i) in the NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats. The new blue laser DVD's will have the capacity to hold an HD program. -

Re: HDTV vs. DVD - which is higher res?!
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 10:11 PMThe point of DVDs was is was a giant jump forward from VHS (and not as bulky as laser-disc) DVDs gave us improved picture quality (480p), interactive/bonus features, and we could watch the movie as many times as we want and the quality never got worse. (unlike VHS tapes)
But, the life of standard DVDs is coming to an end and will soon be replaced by the high-definition discs that can finally make use of those HDTVs some of us are lucky enough to own.
